WHAT IS A CLEANSKIN?
A cleanskin wine is a bottle of Kies Family Wines without a label. When bottling time comes we estimate how many labels we need based on the litres of wine produced.
Sometimes there is more wine than labels, and this results in some cleanskin bottles, which is to your advantage as it is sold at a cheaper price!
This is our GOLD MEDAL winning 2017 Monkey Nut Tree Merlot, without the label! There are only 22x 6-packs available so get in quick!
NEW RELEASE 2017 GOLD MEDAL WINNER – CWSA, 2020
Vineyard Report: The two plantings of Kies Merlot offer very different styles of fruit come vintage. Michael says the older vines which produce the fruit for the Monkey Nut Tree Merlot are about the ugliest vines you’ll ever see but they continue to supply stunning fruit.
Grown on a clay soil with a limestone base, these vines were grafted onto Shiraz rootstock in 1986, they are trained into a single wire and hand pruned.
Winemakers Report and Tasting Notes: The Monkey Nut Tree Merlot was fermented in open tanks at between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius and the juice was pumped over twice daily, then matured for 16 months in 1/3 new French oak barrels.
The Merlot is different from many, with rich fruit, slightly jammy, and exhibiting black currant and raspberry characters. The tannins are firm but balanced to perfection with the fruit and acids.
